Status of the EU DEMO HCLL breeding blanket design development

2018

International audience; In the framework of the European “HORIZON 2020” innovation and research programme, the EUROfusion Consortium develops a design of a fusion power demonstrator (DEMO). One of the key components in the fusion reactor is the Breeding Blanket (BB) surrounding the plasma, ensuring tritium self-sufficiency, heat removal for conversion into electricity, and neutron shielding. CEA-Saclay, with the support of Wigner-RCP and Centrum výzkumu Řež, is in charge of the development of one of the four BB concepts investigated in Europe for DEMO: the Helium Cooled Lithium Lead (HCLL) BB. The rationales of the HCLL are the use of Eurofer as structural material, eutectic liquid lithium-…

A Mössbauer cryostat equipped with a Gifford McMahon cryocooler

1989

A new cryostat for Mossbauer spectroscopic measurements has been developed around a cryogenerator of the Gifford McMahon type operating with helium gas in a closed circuit. Both source and absorber can be cooled to about 30K and the unwanted vibrations caused by the helium compression/expansion cycle have been limited to approximately 0.05–0.06 mms−1.

Functional MRI of the lung using hyperpolarized 3-helium gas

2004

Lung imaging has traditionally relied on x-ray methods, since proton MRI is limited to some extent by low proton density in the lung parenchyma and static field inhomogeneities in the chest. The relatively recent introduction of MRI of hyperpolarized noble gases has led to a rapidly evolving field of pulmonary MRI, revealing functional information of the lungs, which were hitherto unattainable. This review article briefly describes the physical background of the technology, and subsequently focuses on its clinical applications. Four different techniques that have been used in various human investigations are discussed: ventilation distribution, ventilation dynamics, and small airway evaluat…

Neutronic and photonic analysis of the single box water-cooled lithium lead blanket for a DEMO reactor

1998

Abstract The water-cooled Pb–17Li demonstration plant (DEMO) breeding blanket line was selected in 1995 as one of the two EU lines to be further developed in the next decade. In this paper the results of a neutronic and photonic analysis of the `single box' concept is presented. A full three-dimensional model, including the whole assembly and many of the DEMO reactor components, has been developed, together with a three-dimensional neutron source. A tritium breeding ratio (TBR) value of 1.16, with no ports and a Li6 enrichment of 90%, has been obtained and a further analysis has been performed to determine Li6 enrichment that would still ensure tritium breeding self-sufficiency. Selected po…

Cryogenic helium as stopping medium for high-energy ions

2008

We have investigated the survival and transport efficiency of Ra-219 ions emitted by a Ra-223 source in high-density cryogenic helium gas, with ionisation of the gas induced by a proton beam. The combined efficiency of ion survival and transport by an applied electric field was measured as a function of ionisation rate density for electric fields up to 160 V/cm and for three temperature and density combinations: 77 K, 0.18 mg/cm(3), 10 K, 0.18 mg/cm(3) and 10 K, 0.54 mg/cm(3). At low beam intensity or high electric field, an efficiency of 30%, is obtained, confirming earlier results. A sharp drop in efficiency is observed at a "threshold" ionisation rate density which increases with the squ…

Study of the average charge states of 188Pb and 252,254No ions at the gas-filled separator TASCA

2012

The average charge states of Pb-188 and No-252,No-254 ions in dilute helium gas were measured at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Hydrogen gas was also used as a filling gas for measurements of the average charge state of No-254. Helium and hydrogen gases at pressures from 0.2 mbar to 2.0 mbar were used. A strong dependence of the average charge state on the pressure of the filling gases was observed for both, helium and hydrogen. The influence of this dependence, classically attributed to the so-called "density effect", on the performance of TASCA was investigated. The average charge states of No-254 ions were also measured in mixtures of helium and hydrogen gases at low ga…
